Detail:

Continuing the church’s series on the attributes of God, Pastor Jared Longshore teaches on God’s omnipresence in a message entitled “The Presence of God.” It has been said that the more one knows about God the greater the desire to worship God. Three main points show aspects of God’s omnipresence.

God is everywhere. Isaiah 66:1 and Jeremiah 23:23 – 24 offer proof God is everywhere. Unlike we mere physical beings limited by spatial constraints, God, a spirit, is present everywhere at all times. Second, heaven and earth cannot contain God. Again Bible verses, here 1 Kings 8:27, form the basis for this belief. Nothing can contain God. He is immeasurably greater than any container far exceeding the bounds of any limitation.

The third point, God is at hand, shows the personal characteristic of God’s presence while also exhibiting the different features of His presence. God is present with us but He is not present with each person in the same sense. Though God is everywhere, Christ has promised to always be with His followers (Matthew 28:18 – 20) in a personal way. The Spirit has taken up residence in believers after their spiritual birth (John 3). Christ has promised to be with His church in a distinctive way (Matthew 18:20; 1 Corinthians 5:4). Further, Christ is present when Christians gather to partake in the Lord’s Supper as they remember His work on their behalves (1 Corinthians 10:16). The Lord is also near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18).

Since it is true that God is everywhere there are implications and applications. Pastor Jared finds twelve direct applications:

  1. We should wonder at the magnificence of a God who can be everywhere;
  2. We can learn humility since we can only be one place at a time;
  3. We can recognize the falsity of our loneliness since we are never really alone;
  4. We can take comfort when we are separated from those we love knowing God is there;
  5. Bringing this truth to bear on your fear, “Fear not for I am with you” (Isaiah 41:10) gives peace;
  6. Gaining stability in a corrupt world as we know God sees all the acts of all mankind (Proverbs 15:3);
  7. This truth is a way of escape from temptation (1 Corinthians 10:13);
  8. God’s presence should encourage a believer in good works;
  9. God’s presence supports speaking the truth;
  10. An awareness of God’s presence inspires prayer;
  11. God’s presence calms anxiety (Philippians 4:5 – 6).
  12. This teaching emphasizes the faithfulness of God and so can strengthen our faith.

God’s omnipresence, one of the attributes of our King, encourages His children in their walk and gives strength for daily living. This encouragement and strength are available to all who come to Him through Jesus Christ our Lord.
